“Free the Wrecks™” is an initiative by Scubalife aiming to protect sunken ships and planes resting in the Greek seas. These underwater cultural monuments hold great significance both in terms of history and the environment and need urgent protection.
It is very often the case that lost nets and other types of fishing gear get snagged and accumulate on wrecks. Their presence does not allow safe access by divers, makes documentation difficult, and degrades their appearance. Very importantly, as wrecks are sanctuaries for marine biodiversity, fish and other forms of sea life get entangled and die in the nets.
Through targeted sea cleanups, ‘Free the Wrecks’ will be removing obstructions, improving accessibility and making wrecks safer spaces for marine life by freeing them of human pollution.
